"To-day the forest is filled with wreckage. Twelve valiant men perished."
The Alexandra and Yea Standard

RUBICON INFERNO – 12 men burned to death – 7 mills destroyed
13 January 1939

The sudden atmospheric change on Tuesday evening caused the fire in the Rubicon Forest to blaze with intense fury. To-day the forest is filled with wreckage. Twelve valiant men perished, and the district mourns their loss.

...The persistent advance of the fire was due to the long spell of dry weather experienced in the forest, and none of the approved methods of fighting forest fires could stop the insatiable column of fire.

[AYS, 13/1/39]
