Forestry Officer Loses Life
13 January 1939

Older residents of Erica were very sorry to learn of the tragic death of Mr John Hartley Barling, who lost his life in the bush fire at Toolangi. Nine years ago, Mr Barling had been a forestry officer at Erica.

He was 31 years of age, and was the only son of Mr J H Barling, head teacher of the North Brunswick Training School, and held the diploma of forestry from both the Creswick and Canberra Forestry Schools. He leaves a widow and three children.

The late Mr Barling had resided in Walhalla St, Pascoe Vale South. He was cremated at the Fawkner Crematorium on Tuesday.
