On Tuesday night, when the nearest fire was four miles away, a flash of lightning caused a huge dry tree, less than half-a-mile from the Saxton Timber and Trading Co’s sawmill at Tanjil Bren, to burst into flames.

Mr Ben Saxton and 25 employees formed a circle round the tree and extinguished burning bark, etc., as it fell. After four hours, four men were left in charge of what remained of the burning monster. Great damage and loss was thus averted.

On Tuesday, several refugees, including a mother and very young baby, who were threatened with suffocation, were brought to Moe.

Sister Marie, the Anglican deaconness in charge of the Erica district has been supervising the wonderful work of feeding and caring for a large number of refugees in Erica by the Women’s Auxiliary.
