Areas affected by fire in the Black Friday bushfires

Picture of the fires as they engulf the small town of Hill End

Hill End

"Those residents of Hill End who had not already fled the town took shelter in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels and survived the fire."

Mr W. J. Loosemore was a bee-keeper and resident of Hill End, a small town twenty kilometres south of Tanjil Bren. He was an old man who had been through fires before and, on Friday 13 January, he could not be persuaded to leave his home as the fire approached. He apparently believed that this fire would be no different from those he had faced before. His body was found by the side of the road where it appeared that he had collapsed before being overcome by the flames. Those residents of Hill End who had not already fled the town took shelter in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels and survived the fire.
